Dan Fussell, an artillery officer, joined the Army in 2006, following in his brother Michael's footsteps. He completed two tours of Afghanistan, the first as part of a small Australian detachment serving with the British Artillery in Helmand province in 2011. He returned to Afghanistan in 2012, this time serving in Uruzgan with the 3RAR Task Group. Lieutenant Michael Fussell had been killed in Afghanistan in 2008.
