John Anderson deployed to the Middle East Area of Operations three times, first in Bagdad in 2003, then in Bagdad and Tarin Kot in 2007 and most recently as an "embedded" officer with the International Security Assistance Force Headquarters in Kabul. This role, undertaken from June 2012 to January 2013, was as Chief of Exploitation and involved advising and mentoring his Afghan colleagues in counter IED measures.
